Cubicle dimensions are the most misread numbers in office furniture. A 6×6 cubicle is not six feet by six feet of usable space. It is not six feet by six feet of floor space either. This single ambiguity is responsible for more layout failures than any other factor in office planning, and it is almost never explained on a product page.

How Cubicle Dimensions Are Actually Measured
When a supplier says 6×6, they are describing the nominal footprint of the workstation. The critical question is whether that measurement runs to the outside face of the panels, or to the centreline of the panels shared with the next workstation.
The industry convention is centreline to centreline. A 6×6 workstation in a run occupies 72 inches measured from the middle of one shared panel to the middle of the next. Since panels are typically between 2 and 3 inches thick, each workstation gives up roughly half that thickness on each shared side.
The practical consequence: the clear internal dimension of a 6×6 cubicle is usually around 69 to 70 inches, not 72. Over a run of eight workstations that discrepancy is negligible, because the centreline measurement is exactly what makes the run add up correctly. Where it bites is when someone measures the inside of an existing cubicle, gets 69 inches, and orders 69 inch panels.
The Rule That Prevents Most Errors
Measure the room, not the cubicle. Give your supplier the wall-to-wall dimensions of the space and the number of people who need to sit in it, and let them work backwards to the footprint. The square footage tells you less than the furniture list. Here is what each size realistically holds once a person is sitting in it.
4×4, 16 Square Feet
One straight worksurface roughly 48 inches wide and 24 inches deep. One monitor comfortably, two if they are mounted on an arm rather than standing on the surface. A CPU on the floor or a slim unit under the surface. No pedestal without losing legroom. This size works for headset-based work where paper is rare, and it is genuinely uncomfortable for anything else.
5×5, 25 Square Feet
A corner worksurface, typically 60 inches on one leg and 48 on the other. Two monitors sit comfortably. A mobile pedestal fits under the longer leg. There is room to turn a chair. This is the smallest footprint most people can occupy full time without complaint, which is why it dominates call center cubicle floors.
6×6, 36 Square Feet
The default for general office work. An L-shaped surface with 66 to 72 inches on the primary leg and 48 to 60 on the return. Two monitors, a pedestal, an overhead storage bin, and room for a visitor to stand and talk without either person feeling crowded. If you are not sure what size to specify and the work is ordinary desk work, this is the safe answer.
6×8, 48 Square Feet
The point at which a guest chair becomes genuinely usable rather than technically possible. Suits roles that involve short one-to-one conversations at the desk: team leads, account managers, anyone who reviews work with a colleague.
8×8 and Above
These function as private offices without doors. A U-shaped worksurface, lateral file storage, seating for one or two guests. At this size the deciding factor is usually panel height rather than footprint, since the point is confidentiality as much as space.
Worksurface Dimensions Are a Separate Question

Depth. Standard worksurface depth is 24 or 30 inches. Twenty-four inches is adequate for a laptop or a single monitor but tight for a large display, because it forces the screen closer to the eye than is comfortable. Thirty inches is the better default wherever a full-size monitor is used.
Height. Fixed worksurfaces sit at 29 to 30 inches. Height-adjustable surfaces typically travel from about 24 to 50 inches, which covers seated and standing use for nearly everyone.
Corner geometry. On an L or U configuration, the corner is the least usable area of the desk. Some designs use a rounded or clipped corner that gives back knee room; others leave a deep square corner that becomes a place where paper accumulates. Worth looking at on a drawing before ordering.
Panel Height Is Not Part of the Size
A 6×6 cubicle can have 43 inch panels or 66 inch panels. The footprint is identical; the experience is not. One interaction is worth knowing: high panels make a small footprint feel much smaller. A 4×4 with 66 inch walls feels enclosed in a way a 4×4 with 43 inch walls does not. If you are working at the tight end of the size range, keeping panels lower makes the space more tolerable.
Accessibility Clearances
These are not preferences. Under the 2010 ADA Standards, an accessible route through a workspace has to meet defined minimums, and they constrain your layout before any furniture decision.
- 36 inches minimum continuous clear width for an accessible route.
- 32 inches is permitted at a point obstruction such as a doorway, for a maximum length of 24 inches.
- 60 by 60 inches for a passing space, or a T-shaped space with each stem at least 48 inches long, required at intervals along a route.
- For a 180 degree turn around an obstacle narrower than 48 inches, either 42 inches approaching with 48 at the turn, or 36 approaching with 60 at the turn.
At an accessible workstation itself, the worksurface needs knee clearance of at least 27 inches high, 30 inches wide and 19 inches deep, with the surface between 28 and 34 inches from the floor. In practice this means an accessible workstation cannot use a fixed 29 inch surface with a pedestal underneath in the knee space.
A common and reasonable approach is to make a proportion of workstations accessible by specification rather than trying to make every one compliant, while ensuring the route to all of them meets the 36 inch minimum. The Extra Inches Nobody Counts
Nominal footprints do not include several things that consume real floor area:
- Panel thickness at the perimeter. Shared panels are accounted for by the centreline convention, but the outside faces at each end of a run are not shared and add their full thickness.
- Chair travel. A person needs to push back to stand. Around 20 inches behind the desk edge, and this is inside the cubicle only if the footprint allows.

- Columns, radiators and service risers. A structural column landing inside a planned workstation usually costs you that workstation.
- Door swings. A door opening into the floor plate sterilises the area it sweeps.
A useful sanity check: total the nominal footprints of your planned workstations and expect the floor area actually required to be roughly 40 to 50 percent higher once circulation and the items above are included.
Mixing Cubicle Dimensions on One Floor
Most offices should. A uniform grid is simpler to plan and worse to work in, because roles genuinely differ in what they need.
Mixing works cleanly when the sizes share a common module. Combining 5×5 and 5×10 works because the second is exactly two of the first. Combining 6×6 and 8×8 does not divide evenly and produces awkward leftover strips at the ends of runs. Choose one base module and use multiples of it wherever possible.
Keep the same panel height where sizes meet, or plan a deliberate transition with change-of-height trim. Unplanned height changes mid-run look like a mistake because they usually are one.

How to Measure Your Space
- Measure wall to wall in both directions at floor level, not at desk height. Walls are rarely square and rarely straight.
- Mark every fixed obstruction. Columns, radiators, risers, electrical panels, fire equipment. Record the distance from two walls for each so the position is unambiguous.
- Mark every door and its swing. Include the direction of opening.
- Mark windows and their sill height. A panel run against a window below sill height is fine; one that crosses a window is not.
- Record ceiling height and note anything hanging below it.
- Find where power can enter. Wall outlets, floor monuments, and whether the ceiling can take a power pole.
- Measure the delivery route. Door widths, corridor turns, lift dimensions, and whether there is a loading dock.
- Note the egress paths that must remain clear under fire code.
With those eight items, any competent supplier can produce an accurate layout. Without the last two in particular, an otherwise perfect plan can fail on delivery day.
Storage Changes the Size You Need
Two workstations of identical footprint can feel completely different depending on where the storage sits, and storage is the variable most often decided last when it should be decided early.
Mobile pedestals sit under the worksurface and roll out. They consume knee space, which is why a pedestal in a 4×4 makes the workstation genuinely uncomfortable. In a 6×6 there is room to position it clear of the primary seating position.
Overhead bins mount on the panel above the worksurface and use no floor area at all. They are the most space-efficient storage available in a cubicle, and they require panels tall enough to carry them, generally 53 inches or above. This is a real constraint: a low-panel open plan cannot have overheads, so its storage has to go on the floor, which means a larger footprint for the same capacity.
Lateral files are freestanding and consume meaningful floor area. In an 8×8 they fit comfortably. Below 6×8 they usually mean giving up the guest chair.
Shared storage banks at the end of a run remove the requirement from individual workstations entirely, and are almost always the better answer for archive material that nobody touches weekly. Offices that size every workstation around occasional storage needs end up paying rent on filing cabinets.
The practical rule: decide what has to be within arm’s reach and what merely has to be in the building. The first drives workstation size; the second does not.
Sizes in Benching and Shared Layouts
Traditional cubicle sizing assumes one person, one assigned workstation, four panels. A growing share of offices no longer work that way, and the sizing logic changes.
Benching runs a continuous worksurface with people seated along it, divided by low screens rather than full panels. Space per person is quoted as linear feet rather than a footprint: 48 inches per person is dense, 60 inches is comfortable, and 72 inches is generous. Benching fits more people into the same floor than cubicles at the same comfort level, because the circulation and panel thickness overheads largely disappear. What it gives up is storage, privacy and the territorial sense that comes with an enclosed space.
Hot desking and touchdown points need less because nothing is stored and stays are short. A 2×4 or 4×4 is adequate, and the important dimension is how many are provided rather than how large each one is.
Hybrid floors, where a proportion of staff are in on any given day, are where sizing gets genuinely difficult. The common error is sizing for peak occupancy, which leaves the floor looking empty most of the week, or for average occupancy, which leaves people without a desk on busy days. A workable approach is to size assigned workstations for the people who are in daily, provide bench or touchdown space for the rest, and accept that Tuesday will be busy.
How Cubicle Dimensions Have Changed
The direction has been consistently downward, and understanding why helps predict what you will still be happy with in five years.
In the 1980s and 1990s, 8×8 was an ordinary workstation for ordinary office staff. Paper filing needed the space, and a CRT monitor needed 30 inches of depth on its own. Rent was lower relative to payroll, and floor area per employee was not scrutinised the way it is now.
Three things shrank the workstation. Flat screens freed up worksurface depth. Digital records removed most of the filing. And commercial rent rose faster than most other costs, making every square foot a recurring expense rather than a one-off.
The result is that 6×6 now occupies the position 8×8 once did, and 5×5 is unremarkable where it would once have been considered punitive. The trend has probably run most of its course, because the remaining constraints are physical rather than technological: a person needs room to sit, turn and stand regardless of how thin the monitor gets.
For planning purposes, the useful conclusion is that sizing at the tight end of current convention is unlikely to look generous later, while sizing at the comfortable end is unlikely to look wasteful.
